The first GEAR Sharing & Caring Music Scholarship was offered in 1997. Ten applications were received. A group of judges representing both groups selected four students to receive scholarships ranging from $100 to $700 for the 97-98 academic year. A total of $1200 was awarded that year.

In 1998 two students each received $500 scholarships and awards for three 1997 winners were renewed. There were no new awards in 1999, only renewals. To date 6 students have received a total of $5300.
