Not many Berks Countians have roots as deep as Oley's Sacred Oak, believed to be the oldest yellow
oak in the United States. Estimated at between 300 to 500 years old, the tree measures over 21 feet in circumference,
is 85 feet high, and spreads it branches over 120 feet. Indians were said to hold religious ceremonies under the
tree. In the words of a local historian, "legends do not have shallow roots, and this was said to be a healing
godhead of unusual importance, in part because this mysterious yellow oak is not native to Oley or the entire state
of Pennsylvania."
