I just found this site and am so glad that Canal street is listed. Even though our dining experience occured quite awhile ago I am compelled to tell about our experience. My husband and myself decided to treat friends of our to dinner. We will NEVER return. One of our guests is highly allergic to seafood, therefore she ordered a chicken entree. As we began to eat she began to experience shortness of breath, hives and general symptoms associated with some sort of cross contamination with her food. Unfortunalty she did not have her medication with her so she and her husband had to leave immedialty to attempt to stop her reaction or she would have to go to the hospital. When we asked to speak with the manager,we were made to feel as if we had done something wrong. Both of our guests had left to attend to their medical needs, the restaurant made NO offer to "comp" their meals since they had to leave within minutes of being served. It was only after a very ugly conversation did the manager agree to remove the cost of the meals that were uneaten due to the cross contamination and medical necessity to leave. Ideally all four meals should have been "comped" since none of us were able to enjoy the evening. My husband and i were so disgusted with the situation we paid for our meals and left. It was at this point that the waiter decided to follow us to the parking lot and demanded to know why we had not tipped him for the cost of all four meals. he was verbally aggressive and threatening. WE WILL NEVER RETURN AND WILL HIGHLY ENCOURAGE EVERYONE WE KNOW TO NEVER GO THERE. |

Great atmosphere, mature professional crowd, great music, average service. |

Charming little place. The bartender was a bit snobish. I thought the food & drink prices were too high and the entertainment had no talent. I would not go back. |

I suppose when Canal Street first opened it was a good choice (if for no other reason than it was new and different from other Berks County restaurants). The food has always been average. None of the food selections really stand out. Not a bad time for a few drinks, especially when a good band performs. The skinny: If it's a good meal you are interested in try Judy's or some other place. On the other hand, if you are in the mood for run- of-the-mill food (at a place that boosts it is innovative) and a bar scene, then, by all means, give it a try. |

Food was outstanding. Service tried its best, but the food took forever to arrive. The place is in a cool location, but it is pricey and a little snobish. |

Went there for dinner while visiting Reading - I love the atmosphere, the food and service was okay, but not great. I thought that it was a little pricey and that maybe they could use a manager who is not afraid to kick some butt. It was weird how empty it was on a Saturday night, though - I kept wondering where "the action" was because it wasn't at this place, at least not on this particular night. |

As you are probably well aware, the restaurant situation in Berks is very dynamic. New restaurants open and old restaurants close on a regular basis. We need your help keeping this restaurant listing up to date. If you know of a new restaurant that isn't on our list, or a listed restaurant that has closed, we would appreciate it if you would let us know. Thanks!! |
